Long term bitcoin price development - linear and logarithmic
As you can see, these two charts look very different, although they show the same quantity - the Bitcoin price since Bitcoin's first trade. So which perspective makes more sense? Both are good for their own purpose. The linear chart clearly shows Bitcoin's extraordinary price appreciation. The logarithmic chart demonstrates Bitcoin's relative price developemnt. Although the price seems to be flat a couple of years ago, it shows that it was volatile back then as well, even more volatile as today!
We put in much effort to obtain the early prices! The bitcoin network started running on January 3rd 2009, but the first trade occured more than 9 months later: on October 12th, Martti Malmi, a Finnish developer that helped Satoshi work on Bitcoin, bought the first Bitcoin. The first trade was another 9 months later on July 17th, 2010, on MtGox.
